The Silti is one of the subgroups of the Gurage. They are the largest grouping within the Eastern subgroup with about 1155 thousands of population. They did not consider themselves to be Gurage, and in a referendum in 2000 they voted unanimously to form their own administrative unit, the Silte Zone. Today, a considerable number of Silt'e live in Addis Ababa, Adama and other cities and smaller urban centres of southern Ethiopia
The Silti in urban cities make a living as merchants or keepers of petty shops. In the countryside the Silt practice mixed farming and cultivate ensete. There is a need for addressing poverty, human development, rural development, food security, capacity building, greater commercialization of agriculture, enhancement of private sector development, and industrial development.
The great majority of the Silti is Muslim, only about 2 % of them believe in the Christ. Good news is that, in recent years, there is a church plating ministry among the Silti. However, gospel broadcasting, Jesus film and complete bible version are not available in their language.
- There are wonderful opportunities to show the love of Christ to the people of Silti especially in areas of health and education. Pray for the local church and the gospel workers among the Silti.
- Pray for the availability of the Jesus Film and completion of Bible translation in this people group's primary language.
- Followers of Christ among the Silti need prayer support. Pray they will live holy lives, honoring Christ in all they do
