Brunei Malay

 

Population and Background

Brunei Malay, also called Kedayan. Brunei is one of small countries in South East Asia which located near Sarawak Malaysia. Brunei Malay is the name used to refer to several very closely related and assimilated groups of indigenous people of Brunei and Malay. Today, the population of Brunei Malay in Malaysia is nearly 70 thousand people.

Economy

Although Brunei is small, this is one of the most affluent countries in the Southeast Asian. Petroleum was discovered in this place in 1929 and is still producing oil and relying on oil business to this date. This discovery changed the history of Brunei. The government wealth enough to provide for all medical service, subsidizes and housing to the people.

Culture

Brunei Malay are ethnically related to the Malay and also share the same Islamic religion, however, there are many cultural and linguistic differences that make the Brunei Malay distinct from the larger Malay populations. Brunei Malay mainly speaks Brunei Language, also speak Malay and English.

Brunei Malay always feel pound to their Muslim and Sudan culture. They strictly adherent to the teachings of Islam, entertainments are limited, and rarely go for western-style activities. However, as with other nations, the young generations are highly influenced by television, internet and other western life style, of course this would cause disappointment to their parents.

Religion

All Brunei Malay are classified as Muslims at birth; they are exclusively Shafiites Sunnites Muslims. The Brunei Malay people adhere to traditional Islamic practices and beliefs. Many of the Brunei Malay groups characterize their entire people group as being Muslim. This classification, however, is more of a cultural distinction than a characterization of individual beliefs. Individual beliefs will often be influenced by tribal religions of their ancestors.

In Malaysia, there is only 5% of Brunei Malay believe in Christ, and there is no Gospel broadcast, Jesus Film and Bible translated in their language.

Other etiquettes of living

Shaking hand is common greeting behaviors and then they will gently raise their right hand to their chest. When young people see the elders, they will hold both hands toward their chest and bowing.

Most Brunei Malay dining with their right hand. Also, they must use right hand to shake hands with others.

Eating pork and drinking are forbidden in Islam, they also don't eat dead animals.

Brunei Malay strongly oppose to smoking, wasting food, lazy and damaging social morality.

Prayer
  • Brunei Malay groups are physically well taken care of. They have many material resources, but material resources can run dry. There remains a need for spiritual fulfillment, pray that laborers will be sent forth who will go and work among the Brunei Malay.
  • Pray for translation of the Bible to begin in this people group's primary language.
