Development of Churches in Taiwan

Development of Churches in Taiwan

In 1865, Dr. James Laidlaw Maxwell of the Presbyterian Church of England arrived in Tainan and began medical mission work. Dr. Maxwell set up the first Presbyterian church along with a medical clinic; thus, he is given credit for founding the Presbyterian Church of Taiwan. As for northern Taiwan, mission work was started in Tamsui after the arrival of Rev. George Leslie Mackay of the Presbyterian Church in Canada in 1872. In his 29 missionary years on the island, Rev. Mackay established more than 60 churches. He also founded the Mackay Hospital (now Mackay Memorial Hospital) and Oxford College (now Aletheia University).

During the Japanese colonial era (1895-1945), many Japanese Protestant denominations were allowed to establish their respective churches for the Japanese in Taiwan, including Japan Christian Church, Anglicans, Methodists, Congregational Church, Holiness Church (now Taiwan Holiness Church), etc. At first, both churches and Christians did enjoy rapid growth in numbers; however, as Japanese government later on exercised greater control over churches, the growth of Christianity was strangled.

In the 1950s, many foreign missionaries were among the influx of civilians following the Nationalist Party arriving Taiwan from Mainland China. As those missionaries were of different denominations, many churches were established thereafter.
